Alternative Assessments - Definition & Meaning

Alternative assessments, also known as non-traditional assessments or authentic assessments, are evaluation methods used in education that differ from traditional standardized tests. These assessments are designed to measure students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in ways that reflect real-world situations and authentic tasks.

Unlike traditional assessments, which often consist of multiple-choice questions or standardized tests, alternative assessments can take various forms. They may include performance tasks, portfolios, essays, projects, presentations, observations, or other methods that allow students to demonstrate their understanding and application of concepts in practical contexts.

The goal of alternative assessments is to provide a more comprehensive and accurate view of a student's abilities and to promote deeper learning and critical thinking. These assessments are often used to evaluate skills that are difficult to measure through traditional testing methods, such as problem-solving, creativity, and communication.
